Abstract
A mistake will not break you, nor does it make you. Rather, I have come to learn that it can help shape you. In this report, I reflect on the two Experiential Learning opportunities that I have undertaken for the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts and Humanities (SASAH). My first experience was completed in the summer of 2021 as an Academic Support and Engagement Transition Leader. This role included three main components: facilitating Community Connections sessions, working as a Learning Coach for SmartStart Academics, and leading programming for Orientation Week. My second experience was an Undergraduate Student Research Internship completed in the summer of 2023. In this opportunity, I adopted a phenomenological framework to investigate what it is like to occupy a fitness space as a gender and/or sexuality minority. Although these experiences were quite different in nature, the lessons I learned were complimentary. These experiences have illuminated how my unique strengths can be leveraged across work environments, the value that I can add to my academic life, the contributions I can make to my community, and the unique offerings of the SASAH program. I honed skills to thrive in both collaborative and independent work, and, perhaps most importantly, I developed confidence. These combined experiences have shown me that by pursuing my passions, cherishing my connections, and embracing uncertainty, I can pave the path to a future career that I am proud of.
