Abstract
One could argue that scientific approaches to reasoning are becoming endangered with the spread of social media and alternative facts. In this session, I will lead participants through a reflective exercise focusing on the importance and value of directly addressing learners’ comprehension of scientific literacy. The session will begin with basic statistics on the state of scientific literacy in Canada. Participants will then break apart into small focused groups to share ways in which they encourage the application of scientific literacy in their students. As a group, we will create a collaborative infographic to share the importance of scientific literacy and practices that encourage the adoption of scientific literacy skills beyond students’ time in the classroom or laboratory. Participants will be active members throughout this entire session and will walk away from this session with tangible, simple exercises that they can use in their own practice to empower students to develop their scientific literacy.
Elements of Engagement
Participants will be working in small, focused groups to share and reflect on their practices of scientific literacy.
Participants will collaborate to create an infographic to share practices and insights into facilitating students' development of scientific literacy.
