Abstract

This research aims to answer two key research questions: (1) What is the framing employed by Your Own Backyard (2019) to discuss Kristin Smart, and how does this differ from other media formats such as televised news reports? (2) What are the narrative mechanisms that allow this framing to take place? To answer this, a podcast ethnography was used to analyze narrative mechanisms and frames employed by the podcast. The two key theories used were framing theory and affordance theory, as they fit well with the goals of the project. The findings show the framing of Kristin Smart in the podcast was a holistic approach accomplished by portraying her as an individual, her role in the community, as well as her as a person over an extended period. Key mechanisms found were the variety of individuals who were interviewed, and the opportunity for audience engagement with the podcast.
