Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develop and validate a measure of team commitment. Meyer and Allen’s (1984, 1991; Allen & Meyer, 1990) Three-Component Model of commitment was used as the basis for the development of measures to assess affective, continuance, and normative commitment to the team. In addition, the three components were integrated with three terms of team commitment (commitment to team membership, commitment to team performance, and commitment to helping team members). Data from a sample of nurses (N=IOl) provided evidence that the newly developed team commitment measures are reliable and distinguishable from one another and from related constructs. Generally, the team commitment measures related differentially to correlate and consequence variables. Taken together, findings provided preliminary evidence for the validity of the new team commitment measures and pointed to areas where additional attention might be needed. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for theory and research in the areas of workplace commitment and teams, as well as the management of effective teams. The limitations of this research are acknowledged, and directions for future research are suggested.
