Abstract
In this workshop, you will experience as a learner the free online interactive tool How Science Works. You will use it to investigate the richness of the scientific process (including, but not limited to, the scientific method). After that, you will consider with peers other ways in which you might use the tool, including ways to guide learners in designing their own scientific inquiry. This is suitable for educators at all levels and in all scientific disciplines. How Science Works is part of a suite of roughly 600 free, online tools available to educators from HHMI BioInteractive.
Bring your internet-enabled device to access the tool during the workshop.
Elements of Engagement
In the first part of the workshop, participants will engage in an activity that undergraduates do in my classes; they will use an online tool to dissect a case study about a scientific investigation and tease out its parts. Then, they will discuss with peers how they might use such a tool in their classes. I plan to simply present the assignment and explain my goals in using it, then let participants play around with the tool, and then debrief the activity. I will then facilitate a conversation about how the tool could be used to achieve different learning outcomes and to suit different learner levels.
