Abstract

This quantitative study investigates the perceptions of ChatGPT in post-secondary education, exploring its benefits and drawbacks as reported by students and faculty members. With prior ethics approval, a total of 39 participants from a Canadian research university's Faculty of Applied Science took part in an anonymous survey. The findings indicate that ChatGPT is perceived as a valuable learning tool, providing access to additional resources, improved learning outcomes, and time savings. However, issues were raised about response inaccuracies, academic dishonesty and ethical considerations, such as bias and privacy. These results contribute to the understanding of AI's role in higher education and provide insights for educators about the potential opportunities and challenges of using ChatGPT in academic settings. This research was approached by the institutional ethics board.

Elements of Engagement

In our presentation, we plan to involve and engage participants through a combination of interactive elements. Our goal is to create an environment where attendees can contribute their perspectives, share their experiences, and explore the topic of ChatGPT's role in higher education in the context of the conference's theme of "Belonging." Here's an outline of our proposed approach to engaging participants in the presentation:

  1. Presentation of Findings: Present our research findings in a visually engaging manner, using slides and infographics. Encourage questions and discussions throughout the presentation, allowing participants to clarify points or share their perspectives.

  2. Interactive Polling: Utilize interactive polling tools to gather real-time feedback from participants on key questions or issues raised during the session. This can help gauge the overall sentiment of the audience and generate further discussion.

  3. Closing Activity: Conclude the session with a quick reflective activity, asking participants to think about one action they can take to promote a sense of belonging for students and colleagues in their educational environment while considering the role of AI, like ChatGPT, in the process.

By incorporating these interactive elements, our session aims to facilitate meaningful engagement among participants, encouraging diverse perspectives and fostering a sense of belonging within the context of science education and the use of AI tools like ChatGPT.
