Abstract
We have been engaged in the creation of an open-access interprofessional education resource focused on acute stroke care. The goal of this resource has been to highlight the complexities of interprofessional care by focusing on role definition, interprofessional collaboration, and patient-centredness. In the creation of this resource, we have taken deliberate steps to ensure that the case was an accurate representation of every member of the health care team, including the patient and the patient’s family, by engaging in collaborative design. Each health care professional was given full control over how they were portrayed and were encouraged to craft their own scripts and scenes. We also interviewed numerous acute stroke patients and used their stories to create an authentic, yet fictionalized, patient narrative. This helped us overcome professional bias and achieve a more genuine portrayal of each role, resulting in a multi-vocal, multi-perspective and rich digital learning experience. All of the media captured for this case will be licensed under a Creative Commons license allowing other health care professional to use it in their own teaching contexts.
The discussion in this session will focus on how to integrate interdisciplinary perspectives into STEM education and the development and use of open educational resources as an important tool for equitable and multiperspective education.
In this session, we will also showcase some of our media and invite discussion around building this type of interprofessional patient-centered health education module. We also talk about inclusive design and important considerations around representation in STEM curricula and content.
Participants are encouraged to bring a device (mobile phone, tablet or laptop) to allow them to participate; however, other forms of participation will be made available.
We will not be presenting student data analysis, as the resource is still undergoing evaluation. However, we have received ethics approval for this evaluation.
Elements of Engagement
We will have interactive and reflective questions on interdisciplinary (and interprofessional) collaboration for the audience, leveled more broadly at STEM education to ensure relevance to all attendees. This engagement will be facilitated through Mentimeter. We will also leave time at the end for participants to reflect on how interdisciplinary perspectives could be integrated into their own teaching contexts.
We will also be sharing video clips and images from the project to showcase the rich digital media content in the learning module.
