Abstract
We developed an alternative assessment that built in the use of primary literature and science communication skills. We purposefully designed this assessment to be completely different from traditional assessments in science, creating a space for students to explore their own topic of interest and to use their creativity. We decide to give our microbiology students the opportunity to create a sketch video of 2 minutes on a subject of their choice, as an alternative assessment. As we teach in different universities, we added an element of competition between our participating students. With the help of teaching assistants, the students were instructed and supported throughout the different stages of the assessment. These stages were scaffolded at each step of the process and feedback was provided. Final videos were then posted on a platform we could share with all course students at both universities and peer evaluations determined the best videos. Students who created the videos enjoyed the experience and reported improved communication skills and science literacy. Having shared our experience with this alternative assessment, participants will be invited to share their ideas and experiences with alternative assessments. Please bring your ideas, devices, pens, and notepads!
Elements of Engagement
Audience members will be asked to share their experience using alternative assessments. (using google notes or similar online platform).
We will send back a link or document with all the different strategies as a reference for participants.
We welcome discussions to include other microbiology instructors in our competition.
