Abstract

Work-life balance is hard – especially if you are a professor in science and a mom! Women are underrepresented in STEM disciplines due to a variety of issues, one of which is the perception that a career in STEM does not coincide with having a family. As science educators, we are not only balancing our own work-life journeys but also modeling work-life balance (or lack thereof!) for our watching undergraduate and graduate students. For our own health and well-being, as well as for future career aspirations for our students, it is important to invest in our work-life balance.

This workshop will explore research on work-life balance perceptions, challenges, and opportunities associated with women in academia – but then move on to practical, empowering stories and discussions on balancing responsibilities and passions beyond our science educator roles. The goal of this workshop is to foster strategies and share experiences on thriving as current or future academics with additional life priorities, and to challenge the stereotype that STEM careers and having a family are exclusive. Topics of discussion will include seizing unique opportunities afforded to academic positions, strategizing protected time, leaning into rejuvenating activities, simplifying some life challenges, and building a support network. Although this workshop is designed with Professor Mom in mind, people of all genders who have responsibilities and passions outside of academia are welcome to participate.

Elements of Engagement

This workshop will involve storytelling and small group discussions. Following the opening talk, participants will move through various stations to explore pre-arranged and participant-driven prompts to share experiences and strategies on work-life balance. Participants will collaboratively generate mind maps to build on effective work-life balance approaches.
