Abstract

A less-than-desirable midterm result can negatively affect a student’s motivation. Some students feel that math competency is out of reach without being aware that their study strategies may not be as effective as they have imagined. Teaching students to adapt their study habits can help redirect the disappointment towards productive use.

This poster showcases a midterm test correction strategy adapted from a physics education paper. The goal is to guide students to reflect on their mistakes with a growth mindset, set goals and develop productive study habits. While our poster discusses ideas from teaching first-year mathematics, we believe the idea applies to all science courses.

Elements of Engagement

We will encourage participants to share how they incorporate teaching study skills in their courses.
