Abstract
I'll present SimBio's newest simulation-based lab called DNA Explored. Students explore DNA structure and replication using sophisticated simulations, animations, and other interactive tools. Their ultimate challenge - apply what you've learned to replicate a strand of DNA using simulated enzymes and nucleotides. Throughout the module, students reinforce their understanding as they learn about important details (such as base-pairing and 5'-to-3' vs 3'-to-5' orientation of DNA strands). Many embedded questions as well as the simulations themselves include abundant instant feedback to help students check their understanding and stay on track. An extension section covers PCR.
I'll give a quick demo, and then all comers will receive our evaluation software to try it for yourself. Try it this fall in your class at no cost.
If there is time, I'll demo any additional SimBio labs that participants would like to see, ranging from other cell biology modules (Mitosis, Meiosis, Cellular Respiration Explored, and more) to our many ecology and evolution offerings.
Elements of Engagement
All participants will get SimBo's evaluation software and can install and run through the lab(s) themselves. I'll answer questions and take feedback.
