Abstract
Through the use of active learning strategies, this workshop will emphasize the innovative adaptations of andragogical theory into practical applications by highlighting the science-based capstone projects produced by participants of Western’s certificate program in teaching and learning. Andragogy can be defined as the methods or techniques used to teach adults. The goal of the Western Certificate in University Teaching and Learning program is to enhance the quality of teaching by graduate students and to prepare them for a future faculty career. The presentation and group facilitation skills gained while completing the Certificate not only benefits graduate students in pursuit of a faculty position, but are also valued by employers in business, industry and other non-academic fields. Participants will leave this workshop with a broad understanding of the certificate program’s components as well as specific innovative applications they can adapt to their own classrooms.
