Abstract

How does teaching change when both learners and knowledge are construed as complex, dynamic systems? Using university courses in mathematics designed for practicing teachers as the example—and focusing in particular on how a teacher must understand mathematics to be effective—I will discuss some of the promises and problems associated with emergent trends in education that draw on complexity science to rethink both knowledge-producing systems and the systems of knowledge they produce.
