Description
Talk moves are a pedagogical tool that can be used by teachers to enrich discussion and promote further student exploration into topics. They facilitate teacher and student-led discussions by prompting students to clarify, speak more, and elaborate upon their thinking (Walla, 2023; Kazemi & Hintz, 2014). Giving students the ability to build on their reasoning and the reasoning of others allows them to enhance their learning together (Wang et al., 2023). Several studies have found a connection between the use of talk moves and higher academic achievement, indicating that they do in fact have significance in a classroom setting (Walla, 2023; Chapin et al., 2009). Even from the context of mathematical discourse in a classroom, talk moves promote student participation and develop classroom discussion (Walla, 2023). This study aims to analyze usage of talk moves in math classrooms to determine whether the type of math lesson being taught affects the proportion of talk move usage in teacher and student speech.
Acknowledgements
I would like to thank Dr. Lisa Archibald and Rachel Benninger of the H.A. Leeper Speech & Hearing Clinic for all their support and help with getting me to where I am. I came in a completely unexperienced student, but have emerged someone able to apply my learning in a wider field all due to their guidance. I cannot thank them enough.
