Description

The concept of collegial governance is well understood in the post-secondary sector. The basic premise of this is that colleagues make decisions collectively for the benefit of the unit. While collegial governance does aim for consensus, unanimity is not necessary the outcome. The organizational structure of a university is a mediating factor in terms of collegial governance. This research will explore governance structures, specifically in Faculties of Education across Canada. Some comparative analysis will also be undertaken with relevant jurisdictions (i.e., US.) This was done through data collection and conducting a literature review in the area’s collegial governance and governance structures. Through this research we discovered that although most Faculties are not divided into departments those with departments typically did not share administrative support. Often with departmentalization comes more work, thus not sharing administrative support provides compensation for the extra workload.
