Abstract
The article by Erika Simpson examines the atmosphere and discussions at NATO's new headquarters in Brussels, emphasizing the blend of old and new threats faced by the alliance. The impressive facility contrasts with the heightened sense of threat among NATO allies, particularly from Russia. Simpson highlights Poland's new bilateral arrangement with the U.S. and Canada's contribution to NATO's presence in Latvia. The article discusses the continued importance of nuclear deterrence and the complexities introduced by the UN's Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty. Interviews with key NATO officials, including Jamie Shea and Guy B. Roberts, shed light on NATO's strategic considerations regarding nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. The article also touches on emerging threats such as cyberattacks and biological warfare, stressing the urgent need for effective defenses against these dangers. Despite the secure environment of NATO's headquarters, the author feels a lingering sense of insecurity due to the evolving nature of global threats.
