Description
Listed as the seventh (5th?) most deadly tornado in Canadian history and the third in Ontario. The final and most violent of 5 tornadoes generated by the “northern supercell” on May 31 inflicted devastating damage to the south side of Barrie (Allandale). Winds within the tornado were estimated to be in excess of 400km/h (249mph). (F4 rating) [only =200km/h (David A. Etkin, 2002)] One woman described the tornado as a “wide wall of blackness” and “sounded like a train” as she was in her car sitting at the intersection of Essa Road and Fairview Road. Many newspaper articles with survivor stories available.
