Description
The first of a series of tornadoes produced by the “southern supercell” on May 31. The longest tracking tornado ever documented in Canada touched down approximately 5km NW of Arthur and lifted completely just east of Mount Albert over 110km to the ENE. The tornado exhibited violent winds estimated at over 400km/h (250mph), killing 4 adults and injuring dozens. Witnesses described the storm as the blackest sky they had ever seen and a distinct roar like the sound of a train or jet engine was heard as the tornado passed. Almost every building hit by the tornado was either destroyed or severely damaged. Many near misses.
