Abstract
Through a scoping review, this thesis examined the needs and priorities of youth mental health services in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and Canada. Using a comprehensive search across five databases, the study included qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research published between 2000 and 2023. This research focused on all youth aged 15-24 living within the respective regions. The findings reveal significant commonalities and disparities in youth mental health services across the regions. Key needs identified include the provision of culturally sensitive services, accessibility enhancements, and the integration of technology to improve service reach and engagement with their respective communities. Priorities emphasize reducing mental health stigma, increasing physical service accessibility, and enhancing cultural awareness and competency in service delivery. Overall, this thesis underscores the importance of sustainable funding and targeted interventions to meet these identified needs, suggesting a pivotal role for future research in developing and evaluating tailored mental health interventions across diverse landscapes.
Summary for Lay Audience
Mental health is an important topic of conversation for everyone. Particularly among youth aged 15 to 24, it is crucial to recognize the signs of one struggling, as well as knowing how and where to seek help. This research explores the needs and priorities of youth mental health services and how they can vary or stay the same between the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and Canada. Looking at two vastly different regions allows us to understand the universal and unique aspects of mental health experienced by young people globally. Comparing these regions allows for the research to shed light on the disparities and commonalities in how mental health services are provided across differing areas around the world. The findings from this research presents several common challenges and unique needs in both regions. In MENA and Canada, youth populations often face obstacles to accessing mental health care that respects their cultural backgrounds and specific needs. For example, many young people in these areas need services that are sensitive to their cultures, easily accessible, and integrate modern technology to better engage with them. Key priorities for improving these services include reducing the stigma around mental health, creating accessible physical mental health facilities, and enhancing the cultural competence of health providers to ensure everyone receives the care they need in a respectful and understanding manner. Understanding and addressing these needs and priorities is crucial for developing effective strategies that cater to the unique challenges faced by youth in different cultural settings, fostering an overall healthier and stronger future.
