Abstract

What happens when a white, cis-gendered director from Canada travels to Rwanda to direct Canadian playwright Colleen Wagner’s The Monument? What does she learn from her actors and how can they learn from her? When the production travels to Canada, how is it received? Can trauma travel in and through performance, to whose benefit, and at whose cost? Director Jennifer Capraru and scholar Kim Solga reflect together on these and other fraught questions.
