Abstract
This thesis takes the Mesoamerican codices of the XVIth century as a starting point as it analizes its geographical/historical influences to relate them with the literary works Men of Maize by Miguel Ângel Asturias, and the Mayan book the Popol Vuh a. This work elaborates on the progression of Mesoamerican literary manifestations starting from the colonial codices and progressiong towards the diverse translations of the Popol Vuh staring in early colonial times. The Popol Vuh is seen as an inspiration of recent indigenist works such as Men of Meize in the XXth century. This work studies the relationship between these two manifestations given that they attempt to faithfully recreate a Mesoamerican culture and its beliefs. This thesis handles topics that form part of a Latin American collective unconscious and to be more specific, of challenges that, up until present times, take part not only of canonic literary creations.
