Abstract
Using the 2001 Census of Barbados, this study investigates the determinants of labour force participation in Barbados and examines the structure of the Barbadian labour market. This thesis complements previous research by providing a descriptive account of the island’s working-age population and a quantitative analysis of the strength of several socio-demographic factors in predicting work-related outcomes. Human capital theory and dual labour market theory provide a theoretical framework, and the data is examined using cross-tabular analyses and binary logistic regression models. The results reveal that age, sex, educational attainment, the acquisition of training and the presence of children affect patterns of labour force participation in Barbados, however, these factors account for only a small portion of the variance exhibited in the outcomes examined. Based on these findings, additional research into the determinants of labour force participation is required.
