Abstract
The Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) has become a feasible implementation platform for embedded controllers. FPGAs offer advantages of parallel and high- performance implementation, customization, reconfigurability, and the ability to implement hardware and software components of an embedded system in one device. Traditional FPGA design flows and tools, requiring the use of Hardware Description Languages (HDLs), are in a different domain than standard control system design tools such as MATLAB/Simulink. However, system-level tools enable high-level development for FPGAs by abstracting HDL-Ievel details. The application of the Simulink-based DSP Builder system-level tool for development of FPGA-based controllers is studied in this thesis. The capability of DSP Builder is extended by developing a custom library of control system building blocks. The custom library facilitates rapid development of FPGA-based controllers in the familiar Simulink design environment. DSP Builder and the custom library were used to develop a FPGA-based controller for an air levitation system.
