Abstract

There are few examples of covalently linked cadmium chalcogen cluster assemblies and one route of extending this class of compounds is to explore the use of anionic ligands as linker molecules. Ligand exchange reactions of [NPra]2[CdA(SePh)6Cla], 1, and CdioSe4(SePh)12(PPr3)4, 8, with diselenolates were investigated and monitored via NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The data suggest that the diselenolate ligands displaced the terminai groups on the clusters, and possibly exchanged with some of the bridging SePh-. A covalently linked assembly of these species is a likely product and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was shown to be a useful method of investigating and monitoring reactions of this type.
