Abstract

This thesis examines and argues for the feasibility of the sacred in contemporary Indian art. The sacred as proposed in this thesis attempts to bridge the divide between the contemporary Indian art and traditional Indian craft. Drawing on the theoretical framework in Charles Correa’s essay “The Public, the Private, and the Sacred" the thesis examines the work of Charles Correa, Nasreen Mohamedi and my own art practice.

The thesis also builds upon my experience of navigating across the cultures of the East and the West.
