Abstract
Along with aspiring to be a professional theatrical composer, I am also a skilled horn player, and am knowledgeable in its repertoire, history, and various performance techniques . I studied horn throughout my undergraduate degree, and I continue to take lessons outside of school. It is this practical playing experience, combined with my love and study of the great standard horn concerto repertoire of Mozart, Strauss, and Glière which led me to want to write a horn concerto of my own. I have intended this piece to be playable by the widest possible playing pool, so I wrote this work with an intermediate/early professional difficulty level in mind, and the piece demonstrates the range and techniques used in professional horn playing. Please note that the title is Concerto for Horn and Orchestra, not Horn Concerto, because the orchestra is a key participant in this work as well.
Summary for Lay Audience
This piece of music is for solo French Horn and orchestra. The soloist showcases technical skill and lyrical ability throughout the piece. The orchestra plays a key role throughout the music as it accompanies the soloist almost as a partner rather than a subsidiary element, and provides rich orchestration. The music is divided into three sections, called movements, and their intended skill level for the soloist is late intermediate/early professional. The musical style and orchestration are influenced by my favourite composers (Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler) and my playing experience in orchestras.
