Abstract

This thesis is about the homophobia that is present in secondary schools. By drawing on feminist and queer theories I examined the different manifestations of homophobia in schools based on stereotypical understandings about the queer female body. This research found that the extent to which the women were targets of homophobie hatred depended on the degree that their bodies embodied female masculinity with the result that the more that a queer female teacher’s body deviated from the stereotypical feminine norm, the more she was targeted. By investigating the homophobia that is present in secondary schools, I hope to increase awareness of this as a serious problem in the education system and ultimately give agency to queer female teachers whose voices are silenced in this system.
