Since the invention of the artificial respirator in the 1950s, the rate of patients that survive from traumatic accidents, prolonged cardiac arrest, and other brain-damaging conditions  has dramatically increased. This innovation has led to a wide and often undefined spectrum of clinical syndromes and disorders of consciousness (DOC) , including patients ‘awakening’ from the acute phase of coma but without any sign of voluntary interaction with the environment.
