Learning commons tutoring as student development

“Drop-in” writing tutoring sessions can be frustrating experiences, as tutors struggle to help students focus on key problems while working within a tight timeframe. We are designing a combined tracking and follow-up system to allow short, discrete sessions to become part of a more sustained and deliberate process of student development. It will also help writing tutors identify skills deficits in other areas, such as research and information literacy, and refer them to appropriate staff.
