Nave – north wall, window 2 of 3, east to west; To The Glory of God/ And in Loving Memory of/ Augusta W. Hitchins/ John H. Hitchins (across both) “Suffer the Little (l1) /Children to Come Unto Me”(l2): Matthew 19:14 (and Mark 10:14 and Luke 18:16); The image is one of many that the McCausland studio did for the Anglican community in London. A nearly identical window appears at the church of St. John the Evangelist (1932). Aside from variations and color, and Christ holding a child in the Cronyn work, each image corresponds to passages from Matthew 19:14 (and Mark 10:14 and Luke 18:16). In the Cronyn image Peter stands behind the comforting Christ. Peter draws a hand to his mouth in opposition to Christ’s blessing of the children. Peter’s gesture relates to the debate as whether children should be blessed prior to confirmation.
