Abstract
The aim of this research is to provide clinicians, caregivers, and educators with a contextualized Islamic background in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT). This research presents Islamic spiritual resources to potentially be employed in clinical settings involving traumatized Muslim children and their caregivers. TF-CBT is used as a conveying channel of Islamic spiritual resources to clinicians. Mindfulness and Cognitive Coping are the two aspects of TF-CBT used in this research for Islamic contextualization. The mindfulness chapter addresses Sufism’s relevancy and potential contribution of relaxation techniques as an Islamic spiritual resource. The cognitive coping chapter distinguishes the caregiver’s perspective from the child’s perspective, and each is discussed independently. The current research relies heavily on Qur’anic verses, alongside Prophetic teachings, to facilitate simple and accessible spiritual intervention. This research does not attempt to scrutinize TF-CBT or enforce theological positions on clinicians and Muslim families. Rather, its aim is to respond to the increasing demand for culturally competent therapeutic interventions to support the recovery process of traumatized Muslim children and their caregivers.
Summary for Lay Audience
This thesis aims to infuse the evidence-based therapeutic intervention TF-CBT with Islamic-related contextualization and spiritual resources. This research attempts to provide an interdisciplinary approach to address specific aspects of cultural and theological issues that may be encountered in clinical settings. The core of this research is to address the clinical dynamic that includes the therapist, the traumatized Muslim children, and their caregivers. TF-CBT works with traumatized children and their caregivers to maximize the positive impact of the caregiver on the recovery of the traumatized children. It is significant for many Muslim caregivers to raise their children according to their religious and cultural values. The traumatizing context may disturb the child-parent relationship and lead to dynamics that do not support the child’s trauma healing and spiritual development, including religious, spiritual, and theological contexts. Therefore, this thesis attempts to provide a glimpse of contextualization and spiritual resources to maximize positive cultural and religious-related parent-child relationships while enhancing the effect of the therapy. For the mentioned purpose, this research discusses two of the nine aspects of TF-CBT, which are Mindfulness and Cognitive coping.
