Abstract

This study analyzes the way in which the representation and understanding of a historical event are shaped, influenced and affected by the concepts of history and fiction. The direct focus is on testimonio and the presence of a testimonial voice in the literature produced in Guatemala in the last decades of the twentieth century. Due to its inherent complexities, such as memory and representation, testimonio was considered a transitional form of literature directly associated with the armed struggle and the revolutionary movements. Nonetheless, the continuous struggle for an adequate representation of the past has placed testimonio and its challenges at the center of much contemporary Guatemalan fiction.
