Abstract

The present study was designed to determine the effectiveness of an emergent literacy program for English language learning preschoolers through a shared-reading parent training program using CD-ROM stories. Six immigrant children and their mothers participated in a seven-week training program consisting of seven different reading techniques, whereby one technique was taught every week to the mothers within a daycare setting. A single participant pre to long-term post treatment design was employed in order to measure changes in children’s print and word awareness skills, name writing ability and various phonological awareness skills. Children’s levels of English language skills were also examined. A pre- and long-term post questionnaire was used to measure change in reading behaviours and perceptions of program effects for both the children and their mothers. Children demonstrated gains in emergent literacy and English language skills. Changes in reading behaviours and home literacy practices across all participants were noted. Methodological limitations and considerations for future research are discussed
