»DAVID GORDON: Thanks Liz. 11:24:31 Talk about a tough act to follow. Zombie a/POPL / 11:24:39 APOCALYPSE. And for something completely different 11:24:42 . This is the faculty equivalent of Pokemon go. 11:24:48 This is exciting as it gets as your professor I think. This 11:24:53 is a research that we're going for the social sciences 11:24:57 and humanities research counsel on trying to figure 11:25:03 out where and how extensive the suburbs are in Canada. To 11:25:06 do that, we invented a method of classifying 11:25:10 neighborhoods as the census track level. That led to a 11:25:16 whole bunch of fun. So, let me start sharing my screen 11:25:19 which I will 11:25:26 do with -- which one is it Megan 11:25:31 ? » Do you have multiple screens 11:25:33 as well. »DAVID GORDON: It's / 11:25:38 It's hiding. It's like a Pokemon. So, we're going to 11:25:40 share my screen 11:25:49 and we're to start the presentation. I'm here with 11:25:53 the amazing Megan Smythe who 's been 11:25:58 on the team 11:26:04 for the last 4 years. And now we're going to switch the 11:26:07 display settings. » That looks great. 11:26:10 »DAVID GORDON: Away 11:26:17 we go. So, urbanist, geographers, you all know that 11:26:22 Canada is increasingly urban society. You hear this 11:26:25 number floating around. We're 82% you are /TKPWAPB. 11:26:34 urban. What does that mean? Urban famous place van /KAO* 11:26:40 Vancouver for its urbanism. Do we mean we live on the me 11:26:43 anyone sue law enforcement in an apartment and walk 11:26:48 everywhere? How about this? This is 11:26:56 viewing Vancouver. Is this urban? Houses, single detached 11:26:59 houses as far as I can see. Cars everywhere. How about 11:27:05 this? The whole lower mainland. This is what the 11:27:09 definition of urban means from the OECD and statistics 11:27:13 Canada. Urban simply means 11:27:20 nonrural. This is the definition of the area 11:27:25 in Vancouver is not rural. If you ask anyone at stats 11:27:28 Canada how many people live in an urban area like what we 11:27:32 thought of urban like 11:27:36 p by anyone sue law enforcement. It may be 16 11:27:43 which can in Vancouver. The other 84% some form of 11:27:47 suburb where 84% of the population. So we have to 11:27:53 pay a lot more attention to these suburbs. We atested 11:28:00 12 different model for 33 metropolitan areas. We 11:28:02 found the incredible results with this model for /TRAPB /PO 11:28:08 for transportation, the active core, transit 11:28:12 suburbs, transit use greater than 150% of the average. 11:28:17 Auto suburbs which most of you think is upper. Transit / 11:28:21 use less than and 11:28:30 exyou are an areas, we have a lot of commuting 11:28:35 . This model after 5 years of trial and mostly 11:28:40 error is what we mapped all of Canada with?. Every census 11:28:44 tracked. Every neighborhood . Using very simple census 11:28:50 day that we just talked about and Arc map. It over 11:28:54 laid on google earth to do some basic checking if we didn 11:28:58 we didn't know the neighborhood. We would zoom 11:29:01 in and figure out with this definition of this area of 11:29:07 outside the green belt and what y was that being called 11:29:09 urban. It had a bunch of townhouses. So that deaf / 11:29:15 finition of what made urban (indiscernible). That's how 11:29:18 we use street view and check it. What do we find? We 11:29:22 found that 67% 11:29:25 of Canadians live in some kind 11:29:37 of suburb. Transit suburb, auto suburb. Canada 11:29:41 isn't an urban nation, we're a Suburban nation. Probably 11:29:46 two-thirds of you grew up in the suburbs. So, we 11:29:50 totalled it all up. We checked it again with 2011 11:29:55 and 2016 census. We're going to do it again 11:29:59 in 2021. Now we're going to do a fast tour from one side 11:30:06 of the country to the other. Looking at ever METROPOLITAN 11:30:09 area. If you live 11:30:12 in a metropolitan area, you will see your hometown for 11:30:15 about 10 seconds. I'm going to start with Victoria and 11:30:19 end up in St. Johns. Ready, here's Victoria. Victoria 11:30:26 is 21% urban and 79% /SUR burr ban. Here 11:30:36 's Vancouver. 84% Suburban. Huge suburbs out in Langley, 11:30:41 Abbotsford 100% 11:30:51 , Kelowna, 90% urban, Calgary 88% 11:30:59 88% Suburban. Not much of a surprise. Edmonto, actually 11:31:11 more Suburban that Calgary. Lethbridge, rejina 91%. 11:31:18 Winnipeg, thunder bay 84%. Windsor 88%. London where 11:31:22 Liz is, 86% 11:31:30 some form of suburb or anoth the population lives 11:31:46 in. Guelph, 73% /SUR burr ban . Hamilton 88%, Barri, 96%. 11:32:03 Toronto, the metropolitan area is 89% Suburban. St. 11:32:05 Catherines 11:32:21 ; oshawa 7% Suburban. Pe borough, only 74%. Here in 11:32:33 king ton 86%. Ottawa the nations capital, 85% Suburban. 11:32:40 Montreal, that's the only places we visit, 93 -- sorry, 11:32:43 8 /#% Suburban 11:32:57 . Sherbrooke, inquiry beck 81%. Saguenay, 94%. Saint 11:33:00 John, 88% 11:33:07 . Halifax 85% Suburban 11:33:11 . One of the highest exurban, lots of people living 11:33:17 in Halifax way out in the country side. St. Johns 85%. 11:33:20 There we go. Went through the entire country and how do 11:33:23 we do this? We went and checked each neighborhood 11:33:27 using google earth and street view. And we attached the 11:33:31 data which is easy to do to the maps. So we 11:33:36 could see the data and then zoom in on the neighborhood, 11:33:45 y is this Suburban and this 11:33:48 one not. Click on any of these maps and the data pops 11:33:52 up. As part of the demonstration, we're going to 11:33:59 show you how to do this yourself with our data's all 11:34:05 in public at a website called Canadian website. We' 11:34:09 We're giving instructions for you to do this later if you 11:34:11 feel like it 11:34:17 . Here's the Canadian suburbs website and in this 11:34:22 site, you'll find maps already made in PDF form but 11:34:25 also and this is the fun part, you can download a 11:34:28 google earth 11:34:33 file for your town. Liz is from Vancouver 11:34:38 . We're going to go to Vancouver, British columbar 11:34:40 British Columbia and select from all the different 11:34:43 models we did in years. The most recent data with the 11:34:49 the model which is the transportation model for 11:34:54 Vancouver. Click on that and the file drops down. You 11:34:58 can drag and drop that into google earth which we'll do. 11:35:06 I've got google earth open here trying valiantly to / 11:35:10 to crash the system. All you need to do is drag this 11:35:13 for your home 11:35:17 city in and all the data and the map is there for us to 11:35:19 use 11:35:24 . So here we are at google earth prowhich you all have 11:35:29 and I'm sure you have played with some point or another. 11:35:32 And we found this really useful 11:35:34 which you all have and I'm sure you have played with some 11:35:38 course in google earth, you can play with 11:35:45 the transparency, turn off the roads, et cetera. When we 11:35:48 go in and look at this 11:35:54 ; how come this 11:36:03 area, we click on it and see the data. How come this one 11:36:06 is classified as an active core, a walking area. And 11:36:10 right beside it is an automobile suburb, not a 11:36:15 transit suburb but an automobile suburb. This is 11:36:19 the fancy neighborhood of ( indiscernible) in Vancouver. 11:36:23 This side, the data is just big enough number of people 11:36:28 walking to work, walking and taking active transport we 11:36:31 call it 11:36:35 . So that it's more an one and a half times 11:36:42 average of the Vancouver area. Really in this area, this is 11:36:49 a hhigh end suburb and mostly and most people are driving 11:36:54 71% are driving. Across the road here, how come this is 11:36:58 an automobile suburb. Well, not quite the same number of 11:37:02 people. Only 13% are walking or biking to work. So this 11:37:05 thing popped up 11:37:11 as an auto suburb. Zoom in and it's certainly looks like 11:37:16 one. Now we're going to get participatory. We've got 11:37:24 every sen metropolitan area on 11:37:28 google earth. If you put an address in the chat, the QA, 11:37:32 put an address in the chat with the city, we'll zoom in 11:37:37 and you can tell me whether you agree or not with 11:37:42 the designation. Megan, why don't you try your first. 11:37:49 Okay, we got 80 Maple Avenue in Barri from Linda 11:37:53 . Linda, what kind 11:37:58 of -- what kind of area do you think -- is this a walkable 11:38:02 downtown or is this a suburb do you think 11:38:14 ? This is the closest processors have to have any 11:38:16 fun 11:38:29 . We're going to find. Click on it. Make it 11:38:35 translucent. So this is 80 Maple Avenue. We got it 11:38:38 right? So the definition 11:38:42 here is it says, this is 11:38:50 active core. So this is close enough to downtown 11:38:54 Barrie. The neighborhood it's in senses track 11:39:00 six has 14% people walking or biking to work. It is 11:39:05 actually possibl to do that in Barrie. Most 11:39:09 to do that in Barrie in this place, just close you have to 11:39:11 downtown, just enough people are walking and biking to 11:39:14 work. So it shows 11:39:17 up 11:39:20 as a (indiscernible). I'm going to try 401 ranking in 11:39:22 Windsor 11:39:44 . In is showing as an active core as well. Wonder why. 11:39:50 Let's have a look. All right. We go to London 11:40:04 . Translucent. Okay, you're really close to why is this a 11:40:08 walkable core do you think? So, this is because we're 11:40:13 right beside the University of Windsor. So, in the 11:40:17 neighborhood close to the universities, there are lots 11:40:20 of people who walk and bike to work. Doesn't include 11:40:25 students though. So this is my latest research grant 11:40:29 that we're working on. Actually, all you students 11:40:31 have messed up the research model. When we looked 11:40:35 around the campus 11:40:42 at in Windsor a in London and Kingston, we 11:40:45 found the occupied dwelling units, there's a whole bunch 11:40:53 of what are called unoccupi dwelling units. They are a 11:40:56 whole bunch of dwelling units that are quote, not okay 11:41:00 ccupied. That's because statistics Canada, if a 11:41:04 house can completely full of students says there's nobody 11:41:09 living there. You as students are attached to your parents 11:41:13 home for the purpose of the census. There is a really 11:41:17 weird quirk. Only in Canad We're using this right now and 11:41:20 one of my grad students 11:41:24 Matt was using this to map places like Windsor. Which 11:41:31 are the neighborhoods that are being identified. Okay, why 11:41:39 don't we try 42 Aspen hill court or crescent. Aspen 11:41:44 hill crescent. That's kind of a include of downtown 11:41:48 neighborhood this is. Go to the east coast 11:42:03 . We're going to zoom out a bit. The raw map says this is 11:42:08 an exurban area. So, it's an area with rural densities 11:42:12 but a lot of people living in single detached homes and 11:42:14 driving is 11:42:18 . We now look at the Halifax 11:42:27 . Translucent. So we can zoom through. Here's Aspen 11:42:29 hill 11:42:38 court which looks to be a cul-de-sac in the 11:42:44 woods in bed Ford just past the part of Halifax where it 11:42:50 it's solid suburbs. So, the / TKEPSties would be much 11:42:57 lower in this neighborhood. This is typical Halifax 11:43:00 in the exurban area. This is what we call sprawl 11:43:05 people. These are low 11:43:09 density, single detached homes on water that are on 11:43:18 well and septic tanks that sprinkled through the 11:43:22 Halifax area. Aspen court, that looks like it might 11:43:25 approximate serviced which 11:43:28 the others isn't. A neighborhood that's so low 11:43:32 density, I bet you wanted a car when you grew up when you 11:43:38 were a teenager. So, I' m going to stop 11:43:44 here and I think I want to thank everybody who worked 11:43:49 on the back to the final presentation slides. And 11:43:53 thank everybody who worked on this especially 11:44:00 Megan Sythe who help put this presentation together. Our 11:44:03 research, you can download the working papers for the 11:44:08 down of Canadian urbanism and that is entirely open and 11:44:13 available to you by Canadian (indiscernible) dot ca. We 11:44:15 hope it's useful for your research. 11:44:19 » I wonder if Megan has been really on the ball with them 11:44:25 putting some links on the chat . If you the link to that 11:44:28 paper, I'm sure people would love to have it as well. 11:44:31 »DAVID GORDON: It's embedded 11:44:33 in the PowerPoint. » We'll make sure to link the 11:44:36 presentation as well then.
