Diocese of Huron: Art and Architecture

This site documents the Art and Architecture of the Diocese of Huron. The work shown here is the result of two projects. The first was the Diocese's photographic survey that began in November 2015. Over the next four years (completed 5 February 2019), the London photographer, Michael-John Idzerda covered some 30,000 square kilometres documenting the Diocese's 256 churches while producing 3,230 images. In 2020, the Diocese of London graciously provided Dr. Cody Barteet, a professor of Art History at Western, a copy of the photographic survey. Since then, Barteet has worked with Western Libraries Research and Scholarly Communication's team to develop a digital archive of this collection. Working directly with Courtney Waugh (Assistant Librarian), Barteet and Waugh have developed the Anglican Churches of the Diocese of Huron, London, Ontario repository, hosted through Western Libraries' Scholarship@Western. Through research grants, Barteet has worked with graduate students and a postdoctoral fellow to expand the database while also engaging in curricular and academic research programs, including exhibitions (2021, 2023) and digital publications (2021, 2022, 2023) .
In producing this website, our goal is to provide community access to this rich collection of visual material that we are continuously adding to on a monthly basis. We have divided the expansive content into themes: Altars, Choirs, Exterior Views, Interior Views, Material Culture, Memorials, Organs, Stained Glass, and Wall Paintings. Under each category you will find a growing collection of visual materials primarily gathered by Mr. Idzerda's original photographic survey or by Barteet and several members of his research team including Anahi Gonzalez and Katie Oates.
Under each section, viewer's will find a list of each of the Diocese's Deaneries: Brant and Norfolk, Delaware, Essex, Huron and Perth, Lambton and Kent, London and Middlesex, Oxford, Saugueens, and Waterloo. We have furthered divide this content down by church through a series of hyperlinks under each deanery. The links filter the larger content to a specific church or deanery.
