This video contains an interview of Professor Emerita Elaine Bjorklund conducted by Professor Emeritus Don Janelle, a former chair of the Department of Geography at Western. It begins with a presentation by Professor Bjorklund that examines women in Geography in relation to historical and contemporary evidence of cultural change at local and global scales. The presentation touches on the role of women in society, the role of disruptive events in triggering cultural change, and women in academia and specifically Geography. This is followed by an interview session with Professor Janelle that expands on several of the themes. Professor Bjorklund began her academic training with a BSc in Earth Science from the University of Utah, followed by an MA in Geography from the University of Washington and a PhD in Geography from the University of Chicago in 1955. She held academic appointments at Vassar College in New York State from 1956 to 1967. She joined Western first as a visiting Associate Professor in 1967 and permanently in January 1969. She was a full time member of the department until 1993 with research and teaching interests focused on cultural, behavioural and urban geography as well as the Geography of China. She currently holds the title of Professor Emerita.
